Hyco Lake, Mayo Lake & Camping

Hyco Lake & Mayo Lake

Hyco Lake: In the 60's, CPL (now Progress Energy) built Hyco Lake for their coal driven power plant. The lake has 3750 acres (25 billions gallons of water) with 120 miles of shoreline. Hyco lake was constructed on Hyco River with 3 main tributaries, S. Hyco Creek, N. Hyco Creek and Cobbs Creek. Progress Energy purchased the land and impounded the water up to the 420' mark. So when you purchase property on Hyco Lake, your plat will be to the 420' line, not the waters edge. Property owners lease the right to use water front based on the guidelines of the PCLA (Person County lake Authority) . There is boating, fishing, skiing, wakeboarding and camping. Call 336-599-4343 for more information.

Camping: There is a recreation area on Hyco Lake that is ran by the PCLA. It consist of 65 acres with 60 campsites with electric, water, charcoal grill and picnic table. There is a bath house centrally loacted & is a clean facility.  Rates are $20 per night or $400 per year.  Call 336-599-4343 for camping at Hyco Lake and call 336-597-7806 for camping at Mayo Lake.

Boating: At the recreation area, there are 6 boat ramps for public use. The fee is $15 per boat per day, or $50 per year. There is no HP limit on boats, but there is a speed limit of 45 mph. So come on out and have some fun.

Skiing and Wakeboarding: Of course you are allowed to have lots of fun skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, knee boarding & more. Just ask any family member that enjoys Hyco Lake or Mayo Lake.

Mayo Lake Info: Mayo lake is located east of Hyco Lake. It's approx. 2700 acres of fun loving water as well. The only differences between the 2 lakes is, no boat docks are allowed at Mayo Lake and below the high water mark, no mowing or removal of vegetation is allowed. But you can still have all the fun as Hyco Lake. There is camping allowed also on Mayo Lake in it's recreation park. Call 336-597-7806 for more information.
